slskd: A Complete Guide to Self-Hosting the Soulseek Web Client

For more than two decades, the Soulseek network has been the quiet backbone of online music discovery — a peer-to-peer community where collectors share everything from chart hits to recordings that exist nowhere else. The catch has always been the client: the classic Soulseek software is a desktop application tied to one computer. slskd removes that limitation. It is a modern, open-source Soulseek client that runs as a self-hosted server application with a clean web interface, so your searches, downloads, uploads, and chats live on your own hardware and stay reachable from any browser.

    What Is slskd?

slskd is a cross-platform client for the Soulseek peer-to-peer file-sharing network, designed to run unattended on servers, NAS boxes, and small home computers such as a Raspberry Pi. Instead of a desktop program on every machine, you install slskd once, point it at your music folders, and manage it remotely through its web UI.

Under the hood it speaks the same Soulseek protocol as the official client, so it connects to the same global network of users and shared libraries. You sign in with a Soulseek username and password, and from that moment your client searches, downloads, uploads, and shares around the clock — even while your laptop is closed and asleep.

    Key Features

    A Full Web Interface

Everything happens in the browser: searching, browsing other users' files, watching transfer queues, reading chat rooms, and adjusting settings. It works as well on a phone as on a desktop, making it easy to check a download while away from home.

    Serious Transfer Management

Downloads and uploads are queued, prioritised, and retried automatically. You can set global and per-user speed limits and have finished downloads moved into a completed folder. If a remote user goes offline mid-album, slskd keeps your place in their queue and resumes when they return.

    Sharing Done Properly

Point slskd at one or more directories and it indexes them for the network, with options to hide folders and grant selected users extra shares. Because a healthy presence depends on giving back, it is easy to see what you share and who takes it.

    Flexible Configuration

Nearly everything can be set in a single YAML configuration file, overridden with environment variables or command-line flags, and much of it changed from the web UI without a restart. A built-in HTTP API lets advanced users wire slskd into a wider home-server stack.

    How slskd Works

Soulseek is a hybrid peer-to-peer network: a central server handles logins, search requests, and chat, while files travel directly between users' clients. When you search in slskd, the query fans out across the network and results stream back from online peers; when you choose a file, your client connects to that peer directly and the transfer begins.

Running slskd as a server changes the rhythm of using the network: your client is simply always there — searchable, sharing, and working through its queue. Peers with stable, long-lived shares are also the ones who keep rare music available for everyone else.

    Getting Started with slskd

    What You Need

You need a machine that can stay switched on — a home server, NAS, mini PC, Raspberry Pi, or small cloud VPS — plus a Soulseek account: simply a username and password you choose on first sign-in. Add disk space for downloads and, ideally, a collection of your own to share.

    Installing with Docker

The most popular route is the official Docker image, published as slskd/slskd. One container, given a folder for configuration and downloads and one or more folders for the music you share, is enough. The sample configuration and Docker examples published on slskd.com show which volumes to mount and which ports to publish, so a first install takes minutes.

By default, the web interface is served on port 5030. Open it, sign in with your Soulseek credentials, and the client connects. For other users to reach you reliably — and for the fastest transfers — forward the client's listening port in your router to the machine running slskd, as the configuration file's comments explain.

    First Configuration Steps

Three settings matter most on day one: your Soulseek username and password, the directories you want to share, and separate download and completed folders. Let slskd finish indexing before you judge search results — a well-organised library also earns goodwill. Then search for something you love and browse the libraries of the users who have it.

    Who Is slskd For?

slskd suits collectors who already run a home server and want their Soulseek presence there, not on a laptop. It suits listeners rebuilding a library of out-of-print, live, or regional recordings streaming services never carried, and anyone sharing a large collection who wants uploads handled automatically, day and night. If you download only occasionally from one computer, the desktop client may be enough; once you catch yourself leaving a PC on just for Soulseek, slskd is the better tool.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Is slskd free?

Yes. slskd is free, open-source software, and Soulseek does not charge for accounts or transfers. The network welcomes donations, and donors receive priority in download queues.

Does slskd run on a Raspberry Pi or a NAS?

Yes — that is one of its most common homes. The Docker image is built for multiple architectures, so the same container runs on ARM devices like a Raspberry Pi and on ordinary x86 servers and NAS systems.

Do I need to leave slskd running all the time?

No, but it works best that way. Downloads resume on restart, and other users can only reach your shares while you are online, so always-on is both more convenient and better for the network.

Is the web interface exposed to the internet?

Only if you choose to publish it. Many users keep the interface on their home network, or reach it via VPN or an authenticated reverse proxy. Before exposing it beyond your LAN, set a strong web username and password.

Can slskd replace the desktop Soulseek client entirely?

For most people, yes: searching, downloading, uploading, sharing, browsing users, and chat are all covered, and the server model is far more convenient than the desktop habits it replaces.

    Conclusion

Soulseek remains the deepest well of music on the internet, and slskd is the most comfortable way to draw from it: a self-hosted, always-on client with a proper web interface, thoughtful transfer management, and sharing tools that respect the community's give-and-take. Install it once on the machine that never sleeps, and searching, collecting, and sharing move to wherever your browser happens to be.
